Dear Tweeters,
A shrew allowed itself to be captured in my yard on
Saturday. If the only identification book available to
me were Burt and Grossenheider's "A Field Guide to the
Mammals," then I would have to call it a Masked Shrew,
based on coloration of tail, size of animal, and
habitat/location. However, I noticed a species listed
in the new "Birder's Guide to Washington," the montane
shrew. That animal is not in my field guide.
Location is between Lyman and Hamilton in Skagit
County.
I would welcome any pointers on shrew ID.
Yours truly,
Gary Bletsch
