This is in reply to Wayne C. Weber's email of 6/23/04 inquiring about the
location of Mt. Quail.

I live in N. Mason on Bear Ridge above the Tahuya River west of Belfair and
have had mountain quail here every day in my yard. I must admit I do put
out food for quail and other birds on the ground on an old unused lane that
runs by my place. I first saw the quail last year in another part of my
subdivision and had also seen them here at home. The areas they had been in
are frequented by wandering dogs so I wanted to let them have an area that
is dog free.

There have been a male and two females here constantly since mid-spring.
The females are probably brooding on a nest now as I rarely see all three at
the same time as I had been just a couple weeks ago. The male does a nice
job of standing watch while one or the other of the females is here feeding.
I often hear him calling. There is at least another male in the immediate
area as I saw both displaying here in the yard in late April. I have heard
other mt. quail calling from across the valley in the area of Maggie Lake
(mentioned last year by others on Tweeters as an area to find mt. quail).

In addition to the mountain quail a pair of California quail come by
occassionally but are more often seen in a yard near the fire station here
in the subdivision.

The quail are most often seen in early morning (6-8am, noon-ish and early
evening 5-8pm). For my address and directions (most certainly needed)
please contact me personally. Visitors are welcome. I had 6 gentlemen from
Great Britain here in April trying for and getting quail while on their two
week birding trip throughout Washington.

The last I heard of any one finding mt. quail at the airport in S. Kitsap on
Sidney was last year and that being the Sullivan's if my recollection is
right.

Happy birding..........
