There are two features which I think can be used to
age this bird: the banding pattern on the tail and
the very pale eye.

Try as I might, I have been unable to find a Swainson's
Hawk of any age class with a bright yellow iris (but as
always I'm ready to stand corrected). There are several
other features which have already been discussed which
contradict Swainson's, as well.

The apparent absence of any pategial marks would seem to
argue against Red-tail, but that's the only field mark
against Red-tail. The general shape and the head and
bill shape in particular are much more like a Red-tail
than a Ferruginous.

I notice that everyone has carefully avoid the "H" word,
and what I'm going to suggest is technically an intermediate
rather than a hybrid. I think this may be a Harlan's
cross Western Red-tail showing the checkered patagia of
a Harlan's and the overall browner tones of a Western.
