The recent posts regarding Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers reminds me of an insult
my grandfather used to hurl at people or describe them behind their backs.
To him "yellow bellied sapsuckers" were lower than scum, cowards,
unprincipled wimps, etc. And many people were blessed by him with the
insult. My mother would use the same insult in jest, as a parody insult.
I recall asking her what a yellow bellied sapsucker was. She had no idea,
it was just an insult her father used.
Not until YEARS later when I got into birding I found out there really was a
Yellow Bellied Sapsucker! And my mom was sure surprised when I told her!
