Subject: Cowbird seasonal question

Dear Tweeters,

I'd like to shift on the cowbird thread from the
question of "who likes cowbirds" to that of "when do
we see them?"

I recently noticed that, among my hundreds of records
of Brown-headed Cowbird, not one has occurred in the
month of February. In fact, this past month I decided
to expend a little extra effort checking blackbird
flocks (maybe a Rusty would turn up, anyway...)-- but
I could not find one of those slightly smaller,
stubby-billed banditos in any of the blackbird flocks.

Is this just a coincidence, or do these birds thin out
around here in February? I do recall that in the New
York area, they always used to arrive at my feeder in
the first week of March.

=====

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
