Robert,
One of the highlights of spring in Missoula was the
Flickers flying up to the highest clock tower on the
University of Montana, and banging their heads against
the brass cap on top of the tower. You could hear it
all across campus, and I swear all across town. And
they only did this in the spring.
I always assumed it was a male announcing his
territory, or making challenges to all the other
males.
They certainly always seem to go to the highest spot,
and drum on materials that make the loudest noises.
I've had one in my tallest tree drumming on some
dead-wood at the top of the tree. Resonates like a
drum.
