I had one of those brain lapse moments this morning upon hearing a call I
knew was familiar but could not place the singer. So I tried to follow the
call into the woods to refresh my failing memory. Naturally as I got close
enough to maybe see the bird it went still, and I looked and looked in the
area of the song but found no singer. I was standing for a couple of minutes
or so, doing the kind of waiting and hoping that birders do, when I about
jumped out of my skin as a huttons vireo gave a loud, SUWEEEET, right behind
my head just about right in my ear. I physically started, and that spooked
the bird which was no more than 3 feet behind my head. Or maybe, it just
flew away because it was laughing so hard it fell off its branch.....
