Subject: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in Hood Park

Inlanders,

Yesterday, I ventured down to Hood Park in order to look for the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. I began searching around 8:45 A.M. and was joined by Craig and Judy Corder around 10:00 A.M. We decided to split up and check the park. At 10:45 A.M. I found the sapsucker in a pine tree near the restrooms in the far eastern part of the park. After a few brief views the bird flew south and couldn't be relocated even with extensive searching until 12:00 P.M. I left the park at this time, and continued south toward Wallula to check the gulls. The only gulls that were present were: Glaucous-winged, Herring, Ring-billed, and California. Then I decided to bird McNary National Wildlife Refuge, where I found 8 Greater White-fronted Geese along Highway 12. Other than that, no other notable species. On my way home, I stopped briefly at Hood Park, but couldn't find the sapsucker. However, I found a Eurasian Wigeon (which was found earlier in the day by a couple from Portland, OR) on the shoreline and a Brown Creeper. On the trip home, a few Northern Shrikes and Rough-legged Hawks were seen.
