This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for

Sorry for the delayed report-- I thought someone else was forwarding
the reports, but apparently not.

The featured bird is YELLOW-BILLED LOON.


Sightings for March 8

A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was seen in Coal Harbour, Vancouver by a
birder observing from the Bayshore Inn. Also here was a flock
estimated
at 7000 LESSER SCAUP.

The GREAT GRAY OWL was seen again at Colony Farm in Port Coquitlam,
near the duck pond west from Shaughnessy Street. It was actively
hunting at about 6:30 PM. Also seen at Colony Farm were a NORTHERN
SHRIKE and an AMERICAN BITTERN.

At Blackie Spit in Surrey, 4 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen.


Sightings for March 7

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY was reported again at 4126 River Road in
Ladner (Delta), where it has been for months.

Today at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta were a HUTTON'S VIREO, 5
SANDHILL CRANES, 2 or 3 BARN SWALLOWS, 4 VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOWS, and a VIRGINIA RAIL. Two MUTE SWANS were seen near
the Westham Island Bridge in Delta.

The two wintering AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen again at the mouth
of the Serpentine River in Surrey (accessed from Mud Bay Park).

200 SNOW GEESE were seen at the Terra Nova Natural Area, Richmond
(NW corner of Lulu Island).


No sightings reported for March 6


Sightings for March 5

The GREAT GRAY OWL was reported again near the University of B.C.
campus in Vancouver. Today it was seen at the UBC Farm, on South
Campus Road west of Wesbrook Mall.

In Richmond, the BLUE JAY was seen again along Dyke Road near the foot
of No. 5 Road.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at Beach Grove in Delta.

An AMERICAN KESTREL was on 34B Avenue near Highway 17 in Delta.

A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen at Elgin Heritage Park on
Crescent Road in Surrey. Also here were 31 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 4
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 5 EURASIAN WIGEON.


Sightings for March 4

Six YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were seen at Beach Grove, Delta.

Along the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta were 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS
and 2 BRANT. The ROCK SANDPIPER was looked for but not seen.

At Boundary Bay Regional Park in Delta were 98 SANDERLINGS and 44
BRANT.


No sightings reported for March 3.


Sightings for March 2

The wintering CHIPPING SPARROW was seen again at Mound Park, off
168th Street south of Highway 10 in Surrey. Also there were a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and 2 or 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.


Sightings for March 1

The HARRIS'S SPARROW was seen again at the Dunsmuir Community
Gardens near Blackie Spit, Surrey.

At the mouth of the Serpentine River in Surrey were 2 AMERICAN
AVOCETS and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY was seen again at 4126 River Road in Delta.
Near the Westham Island bridge over Canoe Pass in Delta were 10 MUTE
SWANS.


Sightings for February 29

The GREAT GRAY OWLS, both at Colony Farm in Port Coquitlam
and along Wesbrook Mall south of 16th Avenue at the University of B.C.
in Vancouver, continue to be seen.

A third GREAT GRAY OWL was reported from Downs Bowl Park in
Abbotsford. Two GREAT HORNED OWLS were also here. The Great Gray
was looked for but not refound on March 1.
