Taking advantage of a beautiful Sunday afternoon,
Harold & Karen Cottet, and I took an evening drive out
to the West Plains in hopes of finding Sandhill Crane
and Short-eared Owl for our Spokane County. Although
we dipped on the cranes at the Drumheller Road spot,
we did find a pair of SHORT-EARED OWLs well after
sunset (6:15 PM).

The Short-eared owls were patrolling the fields west
of Coulee-Hite Road which runs between Thorpe Road and
Hwy 2 (south of the Hwy.; DL Pg. 88, C2) The habitat
is rolling grassy fields which are sparsely
interspersed with short pine trees. When the owls
became active, there wasn't enough light to see much
color, but is was fun to see them these nocturnal
acrobats silhouetted against the western sky.
