Greetings:

Saw the following yesterday on the way home from work 3/19/04:

Douglas Co., MP 8-12 Hwy. 174 about 10am:
Common Goldeneye, Lesser Scaup, Mallard, Canvasback, Ring-Necked Duck, Whistling Swan, Bufflehead

Lincoln Co., Davenport Lake about noon:
Coot, Mallard, American & European Widgeon, Common Goldeneye, Canvasback, Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Ruddy Duck. The European Widgeon was a single male who seemed to prefer the company of the coots to the many American Widgeons in the vicinity. Just as I spotted him, the sun came out from behind a cloud. What a beautiful bird!

On the way back to work 3/20/04
Davenport Lake about 4pm: Did not see the European Widgeon, but did see a Pied Billed Grebe.

Hwy 174, MP 8-12 (There are several little lakes along this stretch).
No swan, but saw a pair of Barrow's Goldeneye.

Friday was the second time in a bit over a week that I've seen a male European Widgeon at the same location. Don't know if it is the same individual or not. I found it right across the road from the sign that says, 'Honk if you love peace and quet.'

Happy Birding,
Ron McCluskey
