Dr. Rob Butler's book, "The Great Blue Heron," is the resource those of
us involved in researching these birds, turn to every time. No other book
comes close, and no other biologist is as respected or knowledgeable
about our gbh subspecies as Rob. Quite simply, he's the best of the best.

This book is available in paperback through the Seattle Audubon Society
(and no, I don't work for them). Contact Russ Steele for more
information: russells at seattleaudubon.org. Alternatively, it can be
ordered through Amazon --
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0774806346/qid=1080033035/s
r=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-1131589-9468836?v=glance&s=books, and locally at
Elliott Bay Books and Flora and Fauna Books, both of which are located in
Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood.

In a quick scan of the index of this book, I did not see an answer to
your question regarding flight.

Rob will be giving a Seattle Audubon-sponsored presentation, titled Heron
Heroics, Thursday, April 15, at the Center for Urban Horticulture, start
time 7pm. For more information, see
http://www.seattleaudubon.org/home/heroics.html.
