Hello Tweeters,
Yesterday I found a pair of HAIRY WOODPECKERS that appear to be nesting in a large hole in a dead alder tree in our yard. One of the birds keeps watch outside the hole. They appeared to be squabbling over something, so I am not sure if they are a nesting pair on not. They are quite large, but not nearly the size of the PILEATEDS that are also in the area. One of the snags in the area is being pecked full of holes.

The male RUFOUS HUMMMER flashed his beautiful gorget in the sun while feasting on a red flowering current. The female seems to like the little blue flowers of the Pulmonaria or Lungwort. It is the only thing blooming that interests her in my herb garden right now. She will feast on the flowers and then sit up in the huckleberry bush near the feeder, while the male does not seem to like the Lungwort, nor will he sit like she does. He comes the the feeder and then zooms off. It was a thrill to hear his mating call but I could not see him doing his flight display. He zoomed off before I could find him. I could not begin to imitate his call.
