A good rule: if in doubt and it had a short tail (i.e., not a cougar) it was a bobcat.

Thanks to all who replied to my bobcat vrs lynx query. It must have been a very large bobcat that dashed in front of my husband's car as he drove along Mosquito Lake Road east of Van Zandt. >From what I recall, the farther north you go, the bigger the bobcats can get.
