My daughter's unfinished backyard habitat project has already produced an unexpected bonus. A half-barrel (wine) that she filled with water but hasn't yet set up the pump and fountain feature had a visit this afternoon (twice) by a red-naped sapsucker. The water was about 4" below the rim, and it couldn't reach down for a drink so slowly climbed down the inside for a sip. I guess it pays to stay close to home. My wife has now seen this species three times in Adams County, all within two blocks of our house in town; I've seen them only once.
