I've seen Virginia Rails in many parts of the country, but Juanita Bay Park
is the only place I've ever seen a Virginia Rail preening in the open,
oblivious to the people watching close by. This rail may be too tame for
its own good. The pied-bill grebes at Juanita Bay Park are also pretty
tame. Maybe they find the guard rails separating them from the viewers
reassuring. Many first-year birds in late summer are fairly tame because
they haven't yet learned caution. Most rails tend to be shy and secretive
when they are nesting.
