Hello Caren & Tweeters,
Most of the rails I've seen have been furtive. But I did see one
Virginia Rail in Ensenada, Mexica (south of Tijuana) at Estero Beach
that was right out in the open. The tide was out, creating a nice
mudflat, and this bird was at least 50 yards from any cover. My neice
and I watched it walk across the mudflat, from near the water, toward
the salt marsh. It acted like a chicken slowly pecking its way along.
When it got about 10 yards from cover a noisy group of people came along
and it hurridly went undercover. It was one of those "wow" moments in
birding.
