Greetings!

My computer has been "ill" for seven days now, and it's good to be back. Hence this late report....

As Patrick Sullivan mentioned at the end of his Saturday report, I did indeed locate several NORTHERN BOBWHITE at Weir Prairie on Saturday morning around 8:30 AM. The exact location was the portion of the Prairie north of the intersection of Military Rd and Rainier Rd. As you travel north on Rainier from that intersection, it's the first large open area on your right (east side of the road) The gravel roads in this area lead back to a large copse of tall firs that are very visible in the middle of this scrub meadow. To the east of the "small forest" are a few tall, dead snags with lots of Scotch Broom around them. I flushed three BOBWHITE from this cover. Earlier I saw one BOBWHITE on a snag closer to the copse. The bird was about 10 feet off the ground, and quite obliging. The rest of the time they were maddeningly good and staying in cover. At one point I could ID at least 6 birds in different locations by their calls.

This immediate area was very birdy on Saturday morning once the fog lifted. Besides the Bobwhite, there were 5 sparrow species including several nice CHIPPING SPARROWS, and a good mix of warblers, finches and wrens.

At Nisqually we were treated to a fifteen minute show from a VIRGINIA RAIL along the trail to McAllister Creek. A chorus of SORAS (at least 4) were keeping it company.
