Hello Nancy-

Jackson Hole has many good areas to bird, depending on what type of birding you want to do. I feel compelled to make a plug for my father's book 'Finding the Birds of Jackson Hole' which would be of great assistance.

Regardless of whether you choose to use the book, I would be happy to help you. If you let me know what you are targetting, I can be more specific, but my favorite places are:

1) the airport early in the morning for sage grouse and the nearby fields for long-billed curlew.

2) Fall creek road (starts in Wilson and heads south, meeting up with the highway many miles south of town) for forest birds (deciduous), great grey owl, golden eagle.

3) The main elk refuge on the north edge of town for raptors (Swainson's Hawk, RT Hawk, Peregrine/Prairie Falcons, golden eagles, Goshawks.). Yellow rails nested in the refuge a few years back (my lifer), but I don't know if they have been back since. Also, there was a family of cougar on the butte a couple years ago.

4) Fish Creek road (starts in Wilson and heads North).- Forest birds, including evergreen species (crossbills, pine grosbeaks), also most of the warblers/flycatchers.

5) take the tram up on the ski mountain and walk down-great chance of rosy finches (including black), pipits, horned larks, flycatchers, grouse, solitaires, etc.

I hope this helps!
