A birder who is a regular on the Edmonds waterfront reported to Kevin Li
yesterday that two pairs of Purple Martins were at the gourds mounted in
March on the pilings between the ferry dock and the fishing pier. There was
no activity last Monday. I just got back from the waterfront and the two
pairs are still there. One pair was perched on the rebar of the lone gourd,
just below the Osprey, on the farthest piling. The other pair was perched
on the pilings that support three gourds. This is better than we expected.
Kevin had cautioned us that it might take a year to see activity. But it
looks as if we will have nests if all goes well. Many thanks to Edmonds
Parks & Recreation for enthusiastically backing this project and to Kevin
for adding these pilings to the already large circuit of nest sites that he
maintains.
