Tweeters,

Near Scatter Ck. east of Tenino: first Willow Flycatcher (one of the latest
typical spring arrivals) arrival noted today, May 16, in our yard. Cedar
Waxwings first noted May 14, now in notable numbers. Swainson's Thrushes
have been arrived and have been calling (several call note types) since
about May 7, but have yet to sing regularly; this usually begins here around
May 20. First fledgling Steller's Jay seen on May 9, being fed by an adult
in our yard.

Purple Martin: one was seen on a field trip to Capitol Forest on May 14,
flying around the very top of Rock Candy Mt. at about 2300'. Seemed a bit
out of place, but from this viewpoint one can see the lower inlets of Puget
Sound where martin nest boxes are probably but a quick flight for such a
powerful flier. Also found two pairs of Townsend Solitaires and at least
one pair of Western Bluebirds in the last several hundred feet of the road
climb up Rock Candy Mt.

Good birding
