Dear Tweeters,

This evening, a Great Egret flew over the
Lyman-Hamilton Road, near Hamilton-Cemetery Road. This
location is just west of the pond that has had so many
interesting water birds this spring.

All of the Great Egrets that I have seen in Skagit
County over the past 13 years have been seen within a
mile of State Route 20 milepost 76. I often wonder
whether it has been the same bird every time, or if
this is just a good place to see the species for some
odd reason.

Also of note today were two Northern Shovellers and a
pair of unidentified scaup on Cockreham Island. At the
same site (the west pond) were six species of
swallows: a Bank, and a few each of Barn,
Rough-winged, Violet-green, Tree, and Cliff.

Finally, at Rasar Park, participants in today's Skagit
Audubon field trip got to observe a Winter Wren
building a nest. I think this is the first time I have
actually seen a nest of this species. The bird was
carrying bits of moss to a bag-shaped blob of moss
attached to a slender, downward-hanging branch,
directly over a trail.

=====

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
