I would love to see a western tanager. Does anyone know if they nest or migrate through along the Oregon coast. We live 5 miles inland from Nehalem, The house is surrounded by dairy fields and woods and borders the north fork of the Nehalem . There are some huge old alders with open grassy spaces along river. We get black headed grosbeaks, evening grosbeaks, an occasional banded pigeon, cedar waxwinds pass through and the usual regular assortment of chickadees, goldfinches, pine siskins, violet-green and barn swallows, cowbirds, 3-4 sparrows, kinglets, flickers, bald eagle, kingfisher,

Also does anyone have a good method for controlling starlings and house sparrows. The sparrows want to take my nesting box away from the swallows and the starlings are making a mess of the barn and are using a wonderful hole in an old alder by the river that I'd much rather have something else in. I know I can block up the hole in the nesting box but I was wondering would a water pistol work on the sparrows??
