Subject: a possible YB Chat in Skagit

Dear Tweeters,

I was not going to post it, since it was only a
"possible," but after reading Paul Hicks' account, I
thought I would mention my possible Yellow-breasted
Chat.

Last evening, right around dusk, I heard a strange
bird song. It was on the rail-to-trail at the NE
corner of Cockreham Island, just west of the little
wooden bridge over "Etach Slough East." I have only
heard a few chats in my life, and this may not have
been one--but if it wasn't, I'd love to know what it
was.

What I heard was a slow, rich, mellow warble, given
only three times during the course of five minutes.
Each time I heard it, I moved closer, but could see no
bird. The song came from dense riparian brush.
Whatever it was, it certainly was not any of the
songbirds one normally encounters in Skagit
County--not an oriole, or thrush, or warbler, or
vireo, or sparrow, or dipper, or....

Other good birds around here lately included two new
yard birds: a Black Swift yesterday and a Bullock's
Oriole today. A Lazuli Bunting is still singing in my
yard. A Wood Duck hen had seven or more babies on the
little pond east of Lyman on Friday.

=====

Yours truly,
