This is the Vancouver Natural History Society?s Rare Bird Alert for

The featured bird is SNOWY OWL.


Sightings for Sunday, November 7th:

A total of 6 SNOWY OWLS were sighted today, all in Delta; 3 were
seen on Westham Island, 2 were seen at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, 1
was seen across the river from the Brunswick Point parking lot, and 1
was still on the Boundary Bay foreshore west of 72nd St.

In Delta between the mansion (foot of 96th St.) and 88th St, a
gray phase GYRFALCON was seen. Also in Delta, the ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER remains along the 72nd St. hedgerow (south of Churchill
St. but north of the Boundary Bay Airport control tower).

Near the entrance to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, the GOLDEN EAGLE
was seen for most of the day. Nearby, 2 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen
along with AMERICAN PIPITS. Two MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES were
seen in the sanctuary.

In Surrey, the AMERICAN AVOCET was seen just upstream just from
the railway bridge over the Serpentine River mouth at Mud Bay Park,
off Colebrook Road.

At Blackie Spit in Surrey were 2 SNOW BUNTINGS and 3 MARBLED GODWITS.
Nearby at Farm Slough were 2 EURASIAN WIGEONS and
a hybrid WIGEON.

Along Deltaport Way in Delta, an AMERICAN KESTREL was seen.
At the 41B Street intersection, in a flooded field were 20 LEAST
SANDPIPERS and nearby were 30 SAVANNAH SPARROWS

At Point Roberts, the RUDDY TURNSTONE was seen at Lighthouse Marine
Park with 80 BLACK TURNSTONE.

At Brunswick Point in Delta, 2 SWAMP SPARROWS and a NORTHERN
SHRIKE were seen.


Sightings for Saturday, November 6th:

The SNOWY OWL was seen on the foreshore just east of 72nd St. in
Delta.

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen along the 72nd St.
hedgerow in Delta, and 2 BARN SWALLOWS were seen in overflight.


Sightings for Friday, November 5th:

A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen in Burnaby, just south of Canada Way
on Wayburne Drive, on telephone wires.

In Delta, the SNOWY OWL continues along the foreshore west of 72nd
St. The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen at the north end
of the 72nd St. hedgerow.

In Surrey, the AMERICAN AVOCET was seen just east of the railway
trestle near the mouth of the Serpentine River.

At the Westham Island Bridge in Delta, 6 MUTE SWANS were seen.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-
HERON, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE,
and 2 CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES were seen.


Sightings for Thursday, November 4th.

At Reifel, 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen offshore sitting on a log. Also
there were 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 1 NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL, and 1 GREAT HORNED OWL,


Sightings for Wednesday, November 3rd:

In Delta, the SNOWY OWL continues at Boundary Bay, present until
dusk on the foreshore west of 72nd St., just before the greenhouses.
The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continues to be seen at 72nd
Street hedgerow. At the south end of 34th, a NORTHERN SHRIKE
was seen.

In Surrey, a GOLDEN EAGLE flew over the intersection of 64th Ave.
and 152nd St. towards the Mound Farm.
