Subject: [Tweeters] Bird species totals for Bainbridge & Vashon Islands

Ian and Tweeters,

It looks like I misunderstood your original post about numbers of
species seen on Bainbridge, Vashon, and other islands in Washington.
Clearly, you meant the number of species seen by all observers, not
just by one observer.

I thought that 240 species would be a high total for one observer on
Bainbridge. Sheesh!

There certainly have been some other attempts to compile complete bird
checklists for coastal islands. One such example is a report published
in 1958 by William Q. Wick and entitled: "A nine year bird list from
Eliza and Protection Islands, Washington". (Murrelet, Vol. 39, pages
1-9).

Bird lists for the major San Juan Islands (San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez)
could probably be compiled from information in "Birding in the San
Juan Islands" by Mark Lewis & Fred Sharpe (1987). I'm sure there have
been other attempts to compile bird lists for coastal islands,
published or unpublished.
