Tweets: It was with sadness that I read about the shooting of the
Whooping Cranes in Kansas. A lot of money and effort has been put into
their recovery. I was curious if they hunted the Sandhill Crane back
there so emailed my friend near Topeka for a hunting brochure.
They hunt Bullfrog, Rabbits and Squirrel from July to February.
Rail (Sora & Virginia) Sept 1-Nov 9.
Snipe Sept 1-Dec 16
Woodcock Oct 16-Nov 29
Sandhill Crane Nov 6-Jan 2
Crows Nov 10 to March 10.
They also hunt Pintails, Canvasback, Canada Goose, White Fronted,
"Light" Geese. Antelope get a break of a short season of Oct 1-4.
I have not heard what happened to the Whooper shooters but a friend in
New Mexico that follows the cranes intently heard they were not charged
as it was a honest mistake. Jeeze
Anyone having a few days on their way through Kansas should stop at
Quivara Natl. Wildlife Refuge. Beautiful headquarters. Wonderful nature
trail with a lot of innovative bird feeders made from PVC pipe. Super
friendly rangers-they don't see many people. Saw many Little Blue Heron,
assortment of ducks, plovers and lots of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds but
no Rails. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife area is highly touted but we found
Quivara much more interesting. Only in Kansas !!
