Subject: [Tweeters] Good birding cameras?

My wife and I love to bird watch while we travel, and at other times too.
I was thinking of buying her a new camera for Christmas.
She currently has a pretty decent 35mm Canon SLR with a couple of lenses.
She likes to shoot pictures of birds standing still or in flight. The
current camera seems to get fairly reasonable pictures, but we seem to be
spending a lot of money on developing 24 shots and only getting 3 to 4
decent ones.
This year I?d like to get her a digital camera. Or something like a digital
camcorder. And I don?t think I?d like to spend more than $800 or $900
dollars.
I know I?m a little sketchy on the details, but digital looks to be the best
option for getting a lot of shots in, and then editing what we have, on our
computers.
Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
