Jim and Ian,

In 2000, while living on campus at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, I
heard
at
least one individual Winter Wren sing on three consecutive nights. 03
February:
0205 - 5 minutes. 04 February: 0055 - 7 minutes. 0120 - 4 minutes. 2334 -
Singing bouts until past midnight (into 05 February), while a party in an
adjacent building made it too difficult to time and record bouts.

It seemed unusual enough that I made a point to include it in my field notes.
At the time I wondered if the security lighting throughout campus wasn't a
factor in encouraging it. I recall that it continued, and I decided that it
probably wasn't all that uncommon. I decided not to make a project out of it
and did not document other instances in my field notes. I just wasn't up to
the task of getting up, staying up or interrupting whatever I was doing *every*
time I heard one sing in darkness, in order to time the bouts and take notes.
I
don't think I ever checked the Birds of North America account or other
literature to see if it was discussed, but I would be interested in knowing if
it is.
