Research position: Spatial Analyst/Ecologist

Department of Biology, University of Victoria

There is an opening for a Spatial Analyst/Ecologist to work at UVic with Dr Alan Burger (Dept. of Biology) and Dr Rosaline Canessa (Spatial Sciences Laboratory, Dept. of Geography). The position will focus mainly on research and conservation of Marbled Murrelets in British Columbia. Research on other seabirds will be secondary. The person will provide GIS and analytical support to field research projects and also undertake independent research and publishing. The work will involve: liaison with government agencies, forest companies, universities, and other sources of relevant spatial data; development and application of spatial databases using GIS; analysis and interpretation of these spatial data; and contribution to publishing the research in journals.

Qualifications: PhD or MSc and related experience, or Bachelor's degree with strong GIS and analytical experience. Essential requisites are experience with ArcGIS or similar GIS software, and strong quantitative and statistical background. Experience in ornithology or field ecology and experience in writing journal papers is recommended. Person must work independently and as part of a research team, and have good communication skills. In compliance with Canadian immigration rules, Canadian citizens or landed immigrants are given preference.

Period of employment: This is a term position: 1 December 2004 - 31 March 2005 definite; likely continuing to 31 March 2006, pending renewed grants.

Salary: Under review and commensurate with experience; minimum CAN$3,000 per month.
