JOB ANNOUNCEMENT -- WILDLIFE TECHNICIANS

One to three wildlife technicians (contingent on funding) are being sought
to work on a seabird restoration project for Common Murres (Uria aalge)
along the central California coast. This restoration project is
cooperatively conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (San Francisco
Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex), Humboldt State University Foundation,
and other private research organizations. The purpose of the restoration
project is to aid in restoring murre colonies that have suffered damage from
oil spills, gill-net fishing mortalities, and other anthropogenic factors.

Successful applicants must be willing to work long hours, on weekends, and
in inclement weather. Job duties may include conducting population survey,
behavioral and breeding productivity observations on Common Murres and other
species, database entry, data analysis, counting seabirds from aerial
photographs, deploying and removing bird decoys on offshore rocks, and
report writing, or other tasks as assigned. Preference may be given to
applicants with prior field experience with seabird or other wildlife
monitoring and census techniques. Additional evaluation of the applications
may be based on the applicant?s knowledge and experience with computer use,
operation of small boats in the marine environment, and technical climbing
equipment and procedures.

Requirements: 1) Bachelor?s degree in wildlife, biological sciences, or
related discipline with an interest in restoration, wildlife management, or
behavior; 2) current driver?s license with good driving record; 3) must be
willing to live away from the duty station for extended periods (5-14 days);
4) ability and willingness to leap from small boats onto offshore rocks and
ability to rock climb (or willingness to learn rock climbing techniques); 5)
ability to sufficiently move and lift equipment up to 40 lbs.

Two types of technician positions may be filled:
A) Lead field site technician - Responsibilities will include (but are
not limited to): supervision of site crew, day to day operation of field
sites, coordination with project manager, database management, assisting
project manager with administrative duties, equipment purchasing, equipment
management, data collection and interpretation, and assisting project
manager with report writing.

B) Field Technician - Responsibilities will include (but are not limited
to): data collection and interpretation, data entry, assisting with report
writing, and assisting lead field site technician and project manager.
