Subject: [Tweeters] Spruce or Blue Grouse?
Date: Oct 1 19:33:44 2004
From: Martyn Stewart - mstew at naturesound.org

Here is one for you all to play about with.

I sent this sighting to Birdnotes.net <http://birdnotes.net/> and described
my sighting as a "spruce grouse". Extremely unlikely for the area I live in,
the more common bird should have been a Blue Grouse or Ruffed grouse. My
first impression when I saw it was "Blue Grouse" but when I ran into my
studio to get my Camera, I could hear these calls from my microphone that is
constantly on to monitor sounds. I said right away to myself "Spruce Grouse"

Now here is the dilemma, you look at the pictures and they are certainly on
the border line Female/juvenile etc: It is a hard call with the sound
recording.

What do you think?

You will find various constructive replies and pictures/Sound here

All I ask is make sure you listen to the recording as well as the photos. I
have no other reference to the sounds here, all I can get are male sounds, I
believe this is the female "clucking notes of the Spruce Grouse... For
anyone interested, the bird is still around but you need to contact me first
before coming over...

Once I am 100% sure, I will submit this sighting to the records committee
for their consideration.

The water sound on the recording is the pond that is constantly on for the
animals here.
