My wife and I were ferrying our plants and bulbs from the Arboreatum plant
sale this morning, when Robin said, "What kind of call from a crow is
that?" It was not unlike the plaintive juvenile begging call that so
annoyed us by our house this summer, but it was brief, just a note or two.
A few moments later I saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk (ID by size--it was smaller
than the crows) take off from a low branch of a Doug Fir and graze the back
of a fleeing crow from behind and above. There was no mobbing calls or
mobbing behavior, just the opposite. The crows were unusually silent, and
fled as the hawk flew through the ranks of about 4-5 birds.
