This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Tuesday, October 5th, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Sightings for Tuesday, October 5th

The following birds were reported from the Reifel Refuge:
2 MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES, 1 SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER, 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR,
1 CINNAMON TEAL, 6 SANDHILL CRANES, 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 90 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 520 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 3 YELLOW
WARBLERS, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 1 REDHEAD.

At the Iona Island Sewage Ponds was 1 juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER with a
flock of 60 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.

In Boundary Bay off 104th Street was a group of 2 MARBLED GODWITS, 1
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER and 1 RED KNOT.

Sightings for Monday, October 4th:

In the Flooded Field along Highway 17 there was a juvenile SHARP-TAILED
SANDPIPER.

At the Iona Island Sewage Ponds was another juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER,
1 SWAMP SPARROW and 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK.

Sightings for Sunday, October 3rd:

The following birds were all reported from the Reifel Refuge:
An immature PALM WARBLER, an immature NASHVILLE WARBLER, 4 YELLOW WARBLERS,
2 CASPIAN TERNS, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 20 BARN SWALLOWS, 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR,
15-20 (!!) MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES and 20-30 (!!) CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES.

An immature PALM WARBLER, possibly the same bird reported yesterday, was
reported from the pilings just east of 96th Street in Boundary Bay.
In a nearby corn stubble field was a flock of 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE,
11 CACKLING GEESE and 1 "BLUE" SNOW GOOSE.

At the foot of 104th Street the following birds were reported:
In the yard along the dyke was 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, 4-6 BARN SWALLOWS and 2
YELLOW WARBLERS. On the foreshore there was a flock of 4 RED KNOTS and 1
MARBLED GODWIT amongst the thousands of shorebirds.

Along the Iona South Jetty was 1 VARIED THRUSH and 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
In the South-west Sewage Pond was 1 juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER.
Of note was an ususal sighting for the Park of 1 CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE
seen in the trees bordering the Outer Pond.

In Stanley Park near the Stone Bridge was 1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
