This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Saturday, October 16th, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Sightings for Saturday, October 16th

A very late juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was photographed at length with
approximately 100 KILLDEER along 34th Street just 400m before 33A Ave near
Brunswick Point.

At the foot of 104th Street in Boundary Bay the immature PALM WARBLER was
found hawking for insects along the dyke. On the evening hightide there were
hundreds of shorebirds including 1 juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER,
1 MARBLED GODWIT, 6 juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, 3 juvenile RED KNOTS,
1 late juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.

At the Reifel Refuge the immature GOLDEN EAGLE was briefly seen early in the
morning and there was still at least 1 MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE down the east dyke
trail.

Another MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE was seen at 201A Street and 56th Ave in Langley.

At Blackie Spit in White Rock there was a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, 2 TRUMPETER
SWANS, and 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. In the trees nearby was a late WESTERN
TANAGER and 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.

At Beach Grove Lagoon in Tsawwassen there was a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
and 2 singing WESTERN MEADOWLARKS.

Sightings for Friday, October 15th

In a late report the following birds were reported from the Reifel Refuge:
2 MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 1 RUDDY DUCK, 1 RING-NECKED
DUCK, 500+ LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 50+ GREATER
YELLOWLEGS.
