Hi Tweeters,

Just before the end of the workday, I got a call from Jason Paulios about
a Mountain Chickadee that was seen earlier in the afternoon at Keith
Brady's house in west Olympia. I visited Keith's street at 5:30 pm and
had a small flock of chickadees calling as soon as I exited my car.
Several minutes of scanning 4-5 active Chestnut-backed Chickadees in some
nearby shrubbery finally yielded a glimpse of a Mountain Chickadee. Then,
almost immediately, a neighbor's cat appeared in the yard and every bird
went quiet and disappeared, never to return.

Keith indicates that anyone wanting to look for this bird is welcome to
walk up and down his street. His home is on Jackson Avenue, which is two
blocks north of the intersection of Division and Harrison. Keith's house
is near the deadend at the west end of the street. Be prepared for
neighborhood birding, which means you may have look into people's yards
(something I'm never too comfortable doing!).

To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed sighting of a Mountain
Chickadee in Thurston County this fall. The area is a quite ordinary
looking suburban neighborhood, making me wonder how many other Mountain
Chickadees might be scattered across the county's landscape waiting to be
seen.
