Nancy, Bill and Tweeters,

There is an up-to-date (as of 2001) bird check-list for Whatcom
County-- as well as for every other county in Washington-- included
in "Birds in Washington State: a County Comparison", compiled and
published by Ken and Laurie Knittle in 2001. For Whatcom County, this
publication lists 329 species of birds recorded, and assigns them to 5
categories ranging from common (category 1) to fewer than 5 records
(category 5). I consider this publication to be an essential reference
for anyone seriously interested in birding in Washington.

I am assuming that this publication is still in print. If so,
information on ordering it can be obtained by contacting Ken Knittle
at washingtonbirder at hotmail.com . If it is no longer in print, I trust
that Ken will let us know.

The most detailed and authoritative reference on the birds of the
Bellingham area is "Birds of Whatcom County: Status and Distribution"
(184 pages), by Terence R. Wahl, published privately in 1995. I'm not
sure if this small book is still in print, but I'll try to find out
from Terry if it is, and if so, how to order a copy.

These two publications, plus pages 131-142 in "A Birder's Guide to
Washington" (2003), which cover bird-finding localities in and around
Bellingham, should include just about everything one needs to know
about birds in the Bellingham area.
