Subject: [Tweeters] Huge Blue Jay movement

While in Philadelphia for the past 13 months (until 09/17/04), I can say that the numbers of Blue Jays this year when I was doing some bird-monitoring of a site was quite high. Seems a large number of offspring lived this year. I wonder what this will look like next year. Is it possible they are just making a quick bounce-back from West Nile Virus? If so, an over-correction seems a possibility. I'd love to see what the scientists have to say about this.

Hello All,
Just a quick note of interest; It appears in the Carolinas that there has been one of the largest Blue Jay movements ever recorded over the last three weeks. All these birds were headed south in groups of >50 birds. A 1000 Blue Jays were observed at several locations in a single day as they moved south. Huge acorn crop! They have also picked up a number of Red-breasted Nuthatches. Maybe we here in Eastern Washington, Idaho and Western Montana mirror what is happening in the Carolinas? Just an interesting occurrence.
