This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Saturday, October 23rd, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Sightings for Saturday, October 23rd

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER spent the day along the inside of the hedgerow
that parallels 72nd Street. Also seen here was an immature HARRIS'S SPARROW,
2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and nearby a female RUSTY
BLACKBIRD. In a field near the train tracks along 72nd Street was an adult
ICELAND GULL.

Along the Boundary Bay dyke between 104th Street and 96th Street a flock of
4 SNOW BUNTINGS was reported near the pilings.

At the Reifel Refuge 1 MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE was still present halfway down the
East Dyke Trail.

At the end of 34th Street near the Coal Port Jetty Base was a juvenile
PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER.

At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts Washington the adult RUDDY
TURNSTONE was again seen with a flock of 40+ Black Turnstones. Also seen
from the park was a flock of 3 BRANDT'S CORMORANTS and 5 early BLACK BRANT.
Nearby at the Marina were 2 HEERMANN'S GULLS.

At Iona Island on the Inner Sewage Ponds was 1 juvenile SHARP-TAILED
SANDPIPER. On the Outer Pond was a pair of REDHEADS and at the tip of the
South Jetty was a PARASITIC JAEGER as well as a SNOW BUNTING and a LAPLAND
LONGSPUR.

In trees adjacent to an alley just north of Vine and West 47th Street in
Vancouver was a flock of 4 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS.

At Maplewood Conservation Area a very tardy BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER and
WESTERN TANAGER were reported.

Sightings for Friday, October 22nd

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was easily found all day along the hedgerow that
parallels 72nd Street.

At Blackie Spit in White Rock was a flock of 6 MARBLED GODWITS, 1
LONG-BILLED CURLEW, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

At the Reifel Refuge was 1 BARN SWALLOW.
