12:30pm start - water level rising, but with some mudflats visible (9:30
low tide - 2.5 ft; 16:00 high tide - 11.7 ft)
12:50pm end
Tweeters,
High overcast, cool, with the skies darkening to the west - looks as if
the predicted rain is on its way to Turning Basin #3. Not many species
evident, and I thought I was going to be skunked on finding gulls until
a few appeared late in the scan.
No PEREGRINE FALCON when I started, but at 12:43 it flew up to the west
power tower (Hamm Creek) carrying prey. It landed on the first
horizontal crossbar below the catwalk and proceeded to defeather and
start to consume lunch. (My scope is in the shop, so I couldn't tell
what the prey was -- judging from the size of the silhouette as the
falcon flew, I'd guess Rock Pigeon.)
Two river otters swam past me upriver. This is the first time I've ever
seen two, and the first I've seen for quite some time here at TB3.
Birds seen during this scan include the following:
Mallard (4)
Common Merganser (3)
Double-crested Cormorant (4)
Peregrine Falcon
Glaucous-winged Gull (7)
Rock Pigeon (45)
American Crow (10)
Bewick's Wren
American Robin (2)
House Finch (3)
House Sparrow (2)
May all your birds be identified,
Denis DeSilvis
