Today I ventured out to Pendergast Regional Park, which is less than 10 min.
(by car) from my house.

Pendergast is a sports complex--soccer and softball fields ringed by trees.
You can see the Olympics on your way into the parking area. It's very
pretty. The great thing about the park is that it's surrounded by Pope Co.
land that is covered with mixed forest, some wetlands, and utility roads.
It's a fabulous place to bird! You could probably spend a day there easily,
just traversing the roads and trails and checking out the edges near the
sports fields. I spoke with a guy who was out walking his ancient dogs who
says he's seen black bears and a cougar out there, so, it's a wild and
woolly place. I was out there for a couple of hours, here's what I
saw/heard, no particular order:

Am Crow
Common Raven (heard only, but it definitely was a raven)
Song Sparrow
Fox Sparrow
Lincoln's Sparrow
Spotted Towhee
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (great view of the ruby/orange on the crown!)
Hutton's Vireo (don't know what I did to upset it, but it scolded me for a
good 3 min.)
Bewick's Wren
Winter Wren
Am Robin
Black-capped Chickadee
Chestnut-backed Chickadee (alas no Mountain Chickadees)
Bald Eagle - 1 adult, 1 imm (3d year, maybe)
Red-tailed Hawk (imm)

Saw evidence of Pileated and other woodpeckers, also saw 3 different kinds
of squirrels and a garter snake. There are little ponds throughout the area
and the type of trees and shrubs you see in riparian areas, so I'm guessing
this place'll be songbird city next year! In the meantime it's a really
nice place to get your fill of winter birds and a good walk out in the
woods.

Cheers,
Mary
