Tweeters,
With respect to overwintering hummingbirds. I have had a hummingbird feeder up for the last two winters. Over the winter of 2002-2003 there were two Anna's hummingbirds which stayed around throughout the year, a male and a female.
Last winter there were again two Anna's which stuck around getting their sugar water subsidy. In the spring and through the past summer up to the present there have been three, an adult male, a female and what I am presuming is an immature.
Periodically, starting in mid August there have been one or two Rufous hummingbirds which seem to be just passing through. The last rufous was last Sunday. I have a small back yard garden with a small back yard garden in the midst of an urban residential area very close to the zoo. The hummers partake of the various ornamental flowers, but also drink from the feeder throughout the year.
For what it is worth I was at South Whidbey Park yesterday 8-31 walking along the beach and encountered a group of four red crossbills. Three immatures and one adult female.
