A few nice kettles appeared late in the month - maybe migrants, maybe just
roosting groups wandering around. Still, nice to see them. Thanks as always
to the many who send in reports. Following is the turkey vulture report for
British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon for August 2004. As usual, (?)
means no number was given.

01 2 near Wood Lake, Mason County; 3 west of Sumas; 1 near Birch Bay; 1
near Mt. Vernon; 4 on log booms at Port Haney, B.C.; 1 flying near Maple
Ridge, B.C.
02 2 at Port Haney/Maple Ridge, B.C.
03 1 overhead at the CP Rail Yard, B.C.
05 1 between Westport and Tokeland eating a dead baby murre on the beach;
1 overhead near Pitt Meadows, B.C.
07 5 at North Cove; 5 at Tokeland; 3 at Johns River; 2 near Lake Aberdeen;
3 west of Montesano; 3 at Brady; 2 at Satsop; 1 at Elma; 2 near McCleary; 3
east of Greenwood, B.C.; 14 soaring over Kinkade Creek, B.C.; 2 at Big
Qualicum River, B.C.; 5 on log booms at Port Haney, B.C.
08 3 at Westholme area, B.C.; (?) at the Englishman River Estuary
09 1 along the Nisqually River; 1 flying very low SW of Littlerock
11 7 perched in trees and scavenging on a fawn carcass near Nanoose Bay, B.C.
12 3 near North Cove; 2 over Idylwild Campground, south of Pendleton, Oregon
13 2 over the Nisqually River; "a few" at Moss Lake KCP; 1 adult north of
Sequim
14 5 at Tokeland
15 (?) at Legacy Marsh, upper Lantzville, B.C.; 4 at Wood Lake; 1 adult
north of Sequim; 2 west of Duvall
16 a kettle of 18 over Graveyard Spit in Tokeland
17 2 near La Push, 1 perched, 1 flying
18 1 at the Johns River WRA; 2 at Tokeland; 1 overhead at Maple Ridge,
B.C.; 1 overhead at the CP Rail Yard, B.C.; 12 south of Campbell River,
B.C.; 4 soaring further south of Campbell River, B.C.; 1 flying west of
Chelais River; 1 east of Aberdeen
19 1 near English Boom on Camano Island; 1 near Easton
21 18 at the River S Unit, Ridgefield NWR; a kettle of 34 north of
Woodland; a group of 12 south of Woodland; 10 very wet vultures roosting on
four different trees at the edge of the Columbia River on the edge of the
Julia Butler Hanson NWR; 1 over east Wenatchee; 1 near Coulee City; 2 west
of Eatonville
22 25 at the Willapa Harbor Airport, half on the ground, half flying; 2
circling high over Montesano; 1 south of Mt. Rainier; 2 west of Spiral
Butte trailhead
23 3 near Anacortes with one immature
24 24 soaring south near Rattlesnake Ledge, west of North Bend; 7 at the
River S Unit at Ridgefield NWR
25 1 near the Foothills Trail
26 46 migrating in kettles near the Foothills Trail
27 2 at Mt. Erie near Anacortes
28 7 at the Johns River WA; 6 at Bottle Beach; 12 sitting on posts or
flying very low at the Willapa Airport, some were immatures
29 1 at the Oyhut WA; 4 at Salmon Arm Nature Park, B.C.; 14 at Hornby
Island, B.C.; 2 at Gibsons, B.C.; 2 north of Cle Elum; 3 along N. Teanaway
River Road
30 3 digging through bags at a campsite on Thormanby Island, B.C.
31 5 at Leadbetter Point

Later in the month, large kettles may be seen over Seattle and the
surrounding areas. The Salt Creek migration peaks at the end of the month,
gradually lessening into early October. Be sure to look up!!
