A few birds are passing through the area this week on Columbia NWR. Sandhill Cranes have been heard every morning while we tend nets for twice-a-week banding. Yesterday it was mostly White-crowned Sparrows but a few warblers, Willow Flycatcher, Hermit Thrush and one slate-colored Fox Sparrow. This morning we had a sooty Fox Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Western Tanager, R-c Kinglets, Hammonds Flycatcher, and a big flock of Bank Swallows. When I stopped at our shop I found a road-kill Common Poorwill, a probable migrant since I have never heard them calling in the area.
