Related question: Lo these many years ago (1995) I was fortunate enough to
take a week-long breeding bird survey training course put on by the Forest
Service in Oregon. One of the perks of the course was a set of
self-published cassette tapes in one of four versions: "Bird Songs of
Western Oregon," "Bird Songs of Eastern Oregon," "Bird Songs of Western
Washington," and "Bird Songs of Eastern Washington." Since I'd been hired
to do breeding bird surveys in western Oregon, those were the tapes that
came with my registration, although as a Seattle resident I always coveted
the Washington versions. These tapes demonstrated local as well as regional
variations in birdsong, and I remember most particularly learning that
White-Crowned Sparrows on the University of Washington campus sounded
nothing like White-Crowned Sparrows in a clear-cut east of Newport Oregon,
even though I'd come to rely on the consistent tune of the UW WCSPs as a
positive identifier.

Anyway, I literally wore those tapes out, and I would dearly love to hear
one of you out there say that they're going to be put out on CD! Or perhaps
someone has a set I can borrow and duplicate? There is nothing out there
published by a national group that can come close to the local variations
that this set had. In fact, I believe that many of the songs on "western
bird" recordings come from California or even Texas.

Thanks for any information!

Katie

Hi Maurie. There is some information on available bird song CDs on my
website, including info on where you can download bird songs
directly through the internet (why should all the boppers with their iPods
have all the fun!).

Go to www.birdingfaqs.com

Click on "Field Guides" on the table of contents.

Scroll about 2/3rds of the way down that section.

Hi tweets,
Are there any DVD's on birding by ear that you can recommend as well.
Thanks
Nancy
