Subject: [Tweeters] swifts in chimneys--old

Hi, Tweetsters,
I have two reports of swifts roosting in chimneys--both quite old,
unfortunately. However, I have not seen a report from anyone else about one
of the locations, so I'm forwarding a report for that reason.

I finally got to see the swift-in-chimney phenomenon in Portland, Oregon, at
the Chapman School, on Friday, 17 September. Despite the miserable wind and
rain, it was definitely a sight to see--including the raptor that also
attended (I think it was a Cooper's Hawk but not sure). It sat on a top
edge of the chimney for quite awhile, but it didn't ultimately stop the
swifts when they decided to go to roost.

The report I'm forwarding is from my brother, a nonbirder. He saw swifts
(probably, right?) go into a chimney on Labor Day. He was in the small town
of Rainier, Oregon, across the Columbia R. from Longview, Washington. He
said that birds swirled into the chimney of a blue building right on Highway
30 in Rainier.
If anyone else knows of that site, I'd like to know more about it.

in the signature)
