Dear Burt and Tweeters,

What a timely post. I just had my first experience, with Bird calling or pishing. I am not sure if I was technically pishing, we were using an Audubon bird caller thingy.

We were at Juanita bay Park on Sunday afternoon about 2 PM I was with my Five year old son, my 2 year old son, My chatty brother and his medium to large size very well behaved dog. I brought my binoculars but did not have much hope of seeing too many birds. I could feel them fleeing our arrival every step of the way. We walked on the first wood walkway and did not see any birds. At the end we did see some ducks in the water which my two year old yelled "bird, bird"!! They promptly left. on the way back, I asked my brother if he had his bird call, which he did. We stopped on the board walk near the weeping willows and my brother started making noises. almost immediately several Stellars jays started squawking, and coming closer. One stopped on a branch very near us and was looking at us. My brother continued making his little noises. While the Jay was there on our left, to our right a song sparrow came relatively close and was also looking in our direction. At about this time the jay left, so my brother started making one little squeak at a time which the song sparrow responded too. about that time my children started fussing and the song sparrow left.

I must say I did not think that it would work but both birds came relatively close and were looking at us and responding to the noises my brother was making. It was very cool.

Melissa,
