This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Sunday, September 26, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.


Sightings for Sunday, September 26:

A first winter LITTLE GULL was seen at the end of the south jetty at
Iona Island.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL and 7 EVENING GROSBEAKS were at Crescent Park
and a WESTERN MEADOWLARK and a GOLDEN PLOVER species were at Blackie
Spit.

A PARASITIC JAEGER and 4 MARBLED GODWITS were at the Tsawwassen ferry
jetty and another 5 MARBLED GODWITS and a RED KNOT were at the foot
of 104th street in Delta. Also in Delta, 38 SANDHILL CRANES were in a
cornfield at 68th Street and 60th Avenue.


Saturday, September 25:

The CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW was seen at Iona at 10:00 in the morning at
its usual spot in the southeast corner of the southeast sewage pond.
Also at Iona, a PILEATED WOODPECKER was in an area southeast of the
sewage ponds, and there was a RHINOCEROS AUKLET and a PARASITIC
JAEGER off the end of the south jetty.

A juvenile LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was seen in a tall alder behind a home
at the 160 block of April Road in Port Moody.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen at a feeder near Marine Drive and
41st Avenue in Vancouver, while in a late report for Wednesday,
another WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was along the east dyke trail at
Reifel.

At Boundary Bay, the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen at the pilings
west of 104th street, and between 96th and 104th there were 5 MARBLED
GODWITS, an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER and 2 RED KNOTS.

2 PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen off the Tsawwassen ferry jetty and
Reifel had a REDHEAD.


Thursday, September 23:

2 juvenile CHIPPING SPARROWS were at the corner of Chesterfield and
4th Avenue in North Vancouver.

Also in North Vancouver, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was in the east salt
marsh of Maplewood, and 2 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS were in the Edgemont
area.
