Hello all,
This morning Ken Knittle, Alan Richards, MerryLynn and I headed up to
Whitman Co. On the way I spotted a Short-eared Owl south of Central Ferry in
Garfield Co. At Central Ferry there was a Horned Grebe at the grain elevator
in among coots and goldeneye.
After meeting Tom and Diane Weber at Pullman, Whitman co., we found a Varied
Thrush at Kelly Cassidy's place. Just S of Pullman about 1/2 mile, we all
observed a Loggerhead Shrike. At Rose Creek we had Bewick's Wren, Great
Horned Owl on nest, Red Crossbills. On McIntosh Rd. we observed 60+ Clark's
Nutcrackers as they put on a show for us. A Townsend's Solitaire was there
also.
At Albion there were 3 Blue Jays, at Kamiak Butte was a Winter Wren. At
Steptoe sewage ponds were 2 Barrow's Goldeneye. Rock Lake had 9 Dunlin, 1
Greater Yellowlegs, and 1 drake Cinnamon Teal. At Tule Lake were 92 Tundra
Swans, Sheep Lake produced a pair of Eurasian Wigeon, Texas Lake was dead.
Numerous Whistlepigs (Yellow-bellied Marmot) noted, more than a dozen during
the day.
We went up to the large erratic 7 miles north of LaCrosse, and then a
Ferruginous Hawk, 3.2 miles N of LaCrosse. We then went S of LaCrosse 0.5
miles, saw 6 Burrowing Owls, another Rough-legged Hawk, and 3 Long-billed
Curlews and said goodbye to Tom & Diane. After this, near Hooper, we
sighted and photographed a Barn Owl in a basalt cutbank along the highway.
Last, just as the light of the day left us, we saw a Short-eared Owl in
Franklin co., along Nunamaker Rd.
