Hi,
Today I drove down to the West 90 on the Samish Flats (Skagit Co., WA) looking for the gyr (not there). I discovered a PSE road crew putting up devices on the power poles/lines specifically to prevent the electrocution of raptors. They are part of the new PSE Avian Protection Program which is managed by specialist Mel Walters.
They are putting in 51 "devices" on the high density raptor stretch from the "T" down to Pt. Scott on Samish Island. These include line protectors and "T" perches above the usual crossarms. Next time you visit the area, I'm sure you'll notice the changes.
It has to cost PSE alot of money to place these devices and I wanted to let Tweeter-dom know about this program so we can applaud their efforts. I'm not certain who to call but this is a really positive move on their part and we should let them know we appreciate it. Apparently they consider this just a start and will be expanding the program as time goes on.
Good job PSE.
